The 3D printing revolution, and why making is manufacturing (Wired UK)
Thanks to technologies such as 3D printing, the process of boundaries between making an manufacturing have dissolved, meaning that hobbyists can now mass produce in a way that they never could before, according to Chris Anderson, Wired’s US editor-in-chief, at Wired 2011 this afternoon.
He explained that today, the act of coming up with an idea, turning that into a file on a screen and prototyping using a 3D printer is exactly the same as going into production.
“Imagine that instead of pressing print like you do on a document, you could press ‘make’ and pick either one or 10,000.” He said. This is exactly what services such as Shapeways do.
