there may be a scale, along the axis of aspiration, hope, faith, belief, confidence, and hubris. without this scale, we won’t have the capacity to act. aspiration, or something very much like it, will have to be at the origin point. on the negative side of the axis would lie hopelessness and despair, where action may be unthinkable, where we are powerless.
