It’s like Bell Labs but for videogames development. Half Life and all the other weird things they create like Steam or wearable computing are basically a grandiose projects analagous to to massive public/private works like the Hoover Dam or Nasa which were [deep breath] meant to continue the march towards prosperity and signal the success of capitalism. It helps that they are universally loved by their own employees because of the functioning non-heirarchial management structure aping the dreams of “work is play” model of labour that Nolan Bushnell was so desperate to achieve but ultimately failed at implementing.
