Intel details next generation processors.
Intel’s Developers Conference kicked off this week with an announcement about their next generation of computer processors, code named ’Halswell’. The 22nm chips will deliver twice the graphics performance and use half the power of current Sandy Bridge chips, according to the company.
Two and four core versions of the chip are expected to ship in PC’s in April next year. Early versions of the chip have been shown using 8W of power for jobs that use 17W with Sandy Bridge CPUs. This will enable ultrabooks and tablets with even longer battery lives.
Intel estimates most software should see around a 10% gain in performance with the new chip, but that will increase even further once software developers start writing software optimized for the new type of AVX2 code used in the chip.
