my umbilicus from my nearest power outlet to my sofa. the boundary between sofa and not sofa becomes fuzzy when seen from the point of view of the umbilicus. this sofa is not against the wall. my living situation affords a luxurious amount of space at present and so the sofa is free standing, four or five feet away from any wall. the power cable above, the umbilicus, as nicely designed as it is, is an eyesore. as are the other ones atangle around the surge protector.

during a recent remodel of our teaching studios at school I insisted that we deploy power outlets in the floor in the center of some wide open spaces. the contractors had to drill six-inch diameter holes in the concrete floor to reach conduit he had installed to satisfy my request. each hole added 1,000 USD to the project’s budget.

will the IoT demand that walls and floors be like bread-boards, surfaces punctured with a grid of holes each with power available? and can this grid be low-voltage so everything is run as Power Over Ethernet (POE)?

or do I just need my cocoon like sofa to be equipped like the hollywood version of a surveillance van?… all self-contained power supply and autonomous communications…
