In 2016, just one of the top 20 grossing movies, \u2018\u2018La La Land,\u2019\u2019 fit that bill.<\/b> Just about everything else was part of the Marvel universe or the DC Comics universe or the \u2018\u2018Harry Potter\u2019\u2019 universe or the \u2018\u2018Star Wars\u2019\u2019 universe or the \u2018\u2018Star Trek\u2019\u2019 universe or the fifth Jason Bourne film or the third \u2018\u2018Kung Fu Panda\u2019\u2019 or a super-\u00adhigh-\u00adtech remake of \u2018\u2018Jungle Book.\u2019\u2019 Just outside the top 20, there was a remake of \u2018\u2018Ghostbusters\u2019\u2019 and yet another version of \u2018\u2018Tarzan.\u2019\u2019<\/p>\n<p>This year there is more of the same \u2014 the third installment of \u2018\u2018XXX,\u2019\u2019 the Smurfs, \u2018\u2018Pirates of the Caribbean\u2019\u2019 (a franchise based on a theme-park ride), a King Kong movie, Thor, the sequel to \u2018\u2018Blade Runner,\u2019\u2019 a remake of \u2018\u2018Beauty and the Beast,\u2019\u2019 \u2018\u2018CHIPS,\u2019\u2019 \u2018\u2018Power Rangers,\u2019\u2019 another \u2018\u2018Star Wars\u2019\u2019 movie, a \u2018\u2018Guardians of the Galaxy\u2019\u2019 sequel, two Stephen King adaptations (\u2018\u2018The Dark Tower\u2019\u2019 and \u2018\u2018It\u2019\u2019), \u2018\u2018Wonder Woman,\u2019\u2019 \u2018\u2018The Mummy,\u2019\u2019 \u2018\u2018The War for the Planet of the Apes,\u2019\u2019 a retelling of Agatha Christie\u2019s \u2018\u2018Murder on the Orient Express.\u2019\u2019 Every stripe of intellectual property is represented: from comic books to best sellers; from the public domain to unnervingly recent source material like \u2018\u2018Baywatch.\u2019\u2019<\/p>\n<p><b>This environment has fostered, in some producers, a sense of desperation. <\/b>When I asked Vinson if the changes his business has undergone over the past decade have inspired him to panic, he told me: \u2018\u2018Absolutely.
