{"id":38290,"date":"2011-04-30T08:54:04","date_gmt":"2011-04-30T08:54:04","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/rafaelfajardo.com\/portfolio\/increased-computer-use-by-adolescents-cause-for\/"},"modified":"2011-04-30T08:54:04","modified_gmt":"2011-04-30T08:54:04","slug":"increased-computer-use-by-adolescents-cause-for","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/rafaelfajardo.com\/portfolio\/increased-computer-use-by-adolescents-cause-for\/","title":{"rendered":"Increased computer use by adolescents cause for concern | Queen&#8217;s University News Centre"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href='http:\/\/www.queensu.ca\/news\/articles\/increased-computer-use-adolescents-cause-concern'>Increased computer use by adolescents cause for concern | Queen&#8217;s University News Centre<\/a><\/p>\n<div class=\"link_description\">\n<p>Researchers have found a strong association between computer and Internet use in adolescents and engagement in multiple-risk behaviours (MRB), including illicit drug use, drunkenness and unprotected sex. \u201cThis research is based on social cognitive theory, which suggests that seeing people engaged in a behaviour is a way of learning that behaviour,\u201d explains lead researcher Valerie Carson, a doctoral candidate in School of Kinesiology and Health Studies. \u201cSince adolescents are exposed to considerable screen time\u2014over 4.5 hours on average each day\u2014they\u2019re constantly seeing images of behaviours they can then potentially adopt.\u201d The researchers found that high computer use was associated with approximately 50 per cent increased engagement with a cluster of six MRB, including smoking, drunkenness, non-use of seatbelts, cannabis and illicit drug use, and unprotected sex.
