How have art and its institutions reacted? <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>In the Nostalgia District<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>Lauren Cornell is executive director of Rhizome and adjunct curator at the New Museum, New York, USA.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The 16 May 2011 issue of <em>The New Yorker<\/em> featured a cartoon  titled \u2018In the Nostalgia District\u2019. It depicts a row of run-down  buildings. Their facades read: \u2018Joe\u2019s FIX-IT shop\u2019, \u2018Photo Developing\u2019,  \u2018Stationery Supplies\u2019, \u2018ACME Travel Agency\u2019 and \u2018Kwik Konnect Internet  Cafe\u2019, all businesses that have been replaced by online services. Yet  their storefronts remain: whiplashed by a world that\u2019s changed around  them, sudden relics, out-of-sync but resolute. It struck me that there\u2019s  a connection between the \u2018Nostalgia District\u2019 and what we might call  the \u2018art district\u2019, for both have experienced seismic technological  change and have been reticent or slow to respond.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Essential reading!
