\nIn the fall 2012, the Brown University Library will open a state-of-the-art
\nDigital Scholarship Lab, which will feature a high-resolution tiled video
\ndisplay wall, surround sound, and the ability to interact with the wall
\nusing peripheral devices. The Digital Scholarship Lab will provide the
\nfacilities for scholars across the disciplines to engage with research data
\nusing advanced visualization software, to examine and compare
\nhigh-resolution digital content, and to experience audiovisual media in a
\nsetting unique on Brown\u2019s campus. The Lab will complement other
\nvisualization resources on campus, including the Center for Computing and
\nVisualization\u2019s CAVE and the Granoff Center for the Creative Arts.<\/p>\n

The Data Visualization Coordinator oversees the operation of the Digital
\nScholarship Lab (DSL) and identifies, installs, and supports software to
\nfacilitate information visualization across multiple disciplines within the
\ncontext of the DSL. The position is responsible for providing instruction
\nand outreach to faculty, students, and interdisciplinary campus groups in
\ntheir use of the DSL, and will support individual and course-based
\nvisualization projects. S\/He provides leadership in developing
\nvisualization services in concert with complementary services on campus and
\nresponds to student and faculty teaching and learning needs as well as
\nresearch computing strategies as they make use of the DSL. The position
\nreports to the Director of Library Digital Technologies and is a member of
\nthe Center for Digital Scholarship within the Brown University Library.<\/p>\n

Responsibilities:<\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0– Ensures that the DSL space and equipment are fully functional and
\n\u00a0\u00a0accessible to campus users
\n\u00a0\u00a0– Advises, supports, and trains students and faculty from all academic
\n\u00a0\u00a0disciplines in the visualization of data
\n\u00a0\u00a0– Leads workshops and training sessions on information visualization
\n\u00a0\u00a0tools and techniques, in the context of the DSL
\n\u00a0\u00a0– Identifies, installs, and supports relevant software packages
\n\u00a0\u00a0– Advises on specifications for DSL equipment and rendering hardware
\n\u00a0\u00a0– Maintains a current awareness of emerging trends in data visualization<\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0– Creates guides and interfaces to enhance the usability of data within
\n\u00a0\u00a0the DSL
\n\u00a0\u00a0– Supports the development of research proposals for external funding
\n\u00a0\u00a0for visualization activities
\n\u00a0\u00a0– Collaborates on projects in the Center for Digital Scholarship and
\n\u00a0\u00a0other library units as needed<\/p>\n

Qualifications:<\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0– Master\u2019s degree in a field related to information visualization or
\n\u00a0\u00a0equivalent combination of education and experience. Preference for a second
\n\u00a0\u00a0advanced degree in a related field
\n\u00a0\u00a0– At least three years of experience working in the area of information
\n\u00a0\u00a0visualization or demonstrated technical experience in a related area
\n\u00a0\u00a0– Ability to work with data from a variety of sources (e.g., XML,
\n\u00a0\u00a0relational databases, web services)
\n\u00a0\u00a0– Experience with at least one or more programming languages (e.g., C,
\n\u00a0\u00a0C++, Java, Perl, Python, R, Processing)
\n\u00a0\u00a0– Experience with data visualization tools and programming libraries
\n\u00a0\u00a0– Previous experience supporting information visualization in a research
\n\u00a0\u00a0setting
\n\u00a0\u00a0– Experience working with scientific data; geospatial\/geo-referenced
\n\u00a0\u00a0data collections
\n\u00a0\u00a0– Knowledge of data presentation technologies and interactive touch
\n\u00a0\u00a0technologies
\n\u00a0\u00a0– Ability to work effectively with large data sets

\nThe Canadian Writing Research Collaboratory (CWRC) seeks a dynamic
\nproject manager to play a vital role in developing an innovative online
\ninfrastructure for literary scholars at the University of Alberta in
\nEdmonton.<\/p>\n

CWRC is producing a virtual research environment for the study of
\nwriting in Canada, in partnership with other open-source software
\ninitiatives and with literary researchers. It is building a repository,
\na layer of services for the production, use, and analysis of repository
\nand federated materials, and a user interface that integrates those
\nservices. Information about the project and the research it supports is

The project manager is a fully engaged participant in project
\ndevelopment work. A dedicated team member comfortable with both relevant
\ntechnologies and a humanities research context, the holder of this
\nposition manages the development process, assists in developing
\nspecifications for contract work and partnership agreements, coordinates
\nuser needs analysis, oversees the conversion and ingestion of donated
\ndata, and manages one or more subprojects in the software development
\nprocess. Working closely with the project leader and two other staff
\nmembers, the manager represents the project to the University, project
\npartners, and external communities.<\/p>\n
