Snap and send a pic to NameTag\u2019s server, where it will compare the photo to millions of online records and return with a name, more photos, and social-media profiles, such as Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram, where the person (or their friends) might have publicly posted photos of themselves. In the U.S., Nametag will also match the photo against more than 450,000 entries in the National Sex Offender Registry and other criminal databases.<\/div>\n<div>There is already some discussion of the blatant privacy concerns\u2026 and one can see why\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/news.cnet.com\/8301-1023_3-57613489-93\/google-glass-developers-were-still-flying-half-blind\/\">Google has banned this capability<\/a>\u00a0(officially) from its very cautious \u201cGlass\u201d endeavor in wearable augmented reality, preferring to let these frontiers be probed by smaller, expendable companies.<\/div>\n<div>Still, expect a huge row over this, along with campaigns to outlaw face-recog on the streets.\u00a0 As forecast in\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.davidbrin.com\/transparentsociety.html\">The Transparent Society<\/a>\u00a0(1997) this will be a nexus of confrontation between two very different approaches to preserving privacy and freedom, and you can be sure the \u201clet\u2019s all hide!\u201d reflex will start to win, at first\u2026<\/div>\n<div>\u2026until it becomes clear.\u00a0 That the \u201clet\u2019s all hide!\u201d approach\u00a0simply won\u2019t work.\u00a0 And if it did, we would only empower our new masters.<\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Arrival of Face Recognition Apps\u2026 and more transparency news Face-recognition has reached your smart phone, bringing science fiction closer and also (I expect) a storm of controversy.
