Digital humanities gains some of its self-confidence from the democratic challenge that it mounts to that old distinction. \u201cPersonally, I think Digital Humanities is about building things,\u201d said Ramsay in a polarizing talk at the MLA convention in 2011, printed in Defining Digital Humanities. Unlike many theorists, however, he was willing to make this demand concrete: \u201cDo you have to know how to code? I\u2019m a tenured professor of digital humanities and I say \u2018yes.\u2019\u2009\u201d Naturally, most humanities professors, even digital ones, do not know how to code, and Ramsay\u2019s bluntness caused a backlash: \u201cboy, did this get me in trouble,\u201d he writes in a note to his essay.
