Given that the FCC is staffed and<br \/>\nled by former telcoms lobbyists and executives, this poses a real<br \/>\ndifficulty. Unless the Commission can massage the truth, it might<br \/>\nactually have to hold its corporate pals to account.\n<\/p>\n<p>\nEnter AT&amp;T and Verizon, who just filed comments with the FCC saying that broadband in America is fine,<br \/>\n despite the dismal pace of fiber and even cable rollout \u2013 because the<br \/>\nwireless carriers have picked up the slack by offering slower, more<br \/>\nexpensive wireless plans that combine brutally low data-caps with <a href=\"https:\/\/boingboing.net\/2018\/09\/19\/sleazy-af.html\">arbitrary throttling<\/a>.<br \/>\nThe carriers were joined by their lobbyists, the NCTA, who filed similar comments.\n<\/p>\n<p><i><a href=\"https:\/\/boingboing.net\/2018\/09\/20\/regulatory-capture.html\">https:\/\/boingboing.net\/2018\/09\/20\/regulatory-capture.html<\/a><\/i><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>mostlysignssomeportents: Every year, the FCC checks in with the industry it nominally regulates to see whether broadband deployment is going well; if it determines that Americans are getting the internet they need, then it can legally shrug off its duty to regulate the carriers and force them to step up the pace.
