I give each kid a \u201cRobot Language Dictionary\u201d and explain to them that this is the language their robot understands. The dictionary has symbols for \u201cmove left leg forward\u201d, \u201cturn left\u201d, \u201cgrab\u201d, \u201cdrop\u201d etc.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<blockquote>\n<p>However, I was pleasantly surprised on how much more the kids learned. On their own they figured out the following things (in a 30-min session):\n<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\nProgram Parametrization: Instead of putting a forward step ten times, they put a 10 in front of the \u201cstep\u201d symbol (A five-year-old figure it out and asked me if she could do it).<\/li>\n<li>\nComposition: Grouping of a set of moves (\u201cmove left leg forward, then move right leg forward and do this combo 10 times\u201d)\n<\/li>\n<li>Abstraction: \u201cRun in a circle, then say \u201cI\u2019m dizzy!\u201d , then call this the \u201cRun Dizzy\u201d program and do it 100 times. (For some reason, kids loved making their parents repeat stuff 100 times over.)\n<\/li>\n<li>Unit testing: They\u2019d write a test program to get the parents moving a few steps, have their parents run it, then fix it and run it again, and then add a few more steps until they reach the goal.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>How To Train Your Robot xtianw: The game works as follows: every kid is turned into a \u201crobot master\u201d and their mom or dad becomes their \u201crobot\u201d.
