It\u2019s based on the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.runnersworld.co.uk\/reviews\/shoes\/performance-shoes\/nike-mayfly\/343.html\">Nike Mayfly<\/a> &#8211; a running shoe with an explicitly declared lifespan of just 100km (about a fifth of the distance of an average running shoe). The box contains an address to send them to so they can be recycled and there\u2019s a part of the shoe that allows you to record the date and location they started their functional life.<\/p>\n<p><strong>That\u2019s the bit I like. It touches on something I\u2019ve been fascinated by since I read <a href=\"http:\/\/rcm-uk.amazon.co.uk\/e\/cm?lt1=_blank&amp;bc1=000000&amp;IS2=1&amp;bg1=FFFFFF&amp;fc1=000000&amp;lc1=0000FF&amp;t=benbash-21&amp;o=2&amp;p=8&amp;l=as4&amp;m=amazon&amp;f=ifr&amp;asins=0262693267\">Shaping Things<\/a>.\u00a0They\u2019re exciting to me because they\u2019re hinting at being\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Spime\">spime<\/a> shoes.<\/strong><br \/>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>If, like the logo implies, new Mayflies really <em>are<\/em> made from old ones I\u2019d love to see that information kept somehow. I\u2019d love to see them show how many generations old they are and I\u2019d love to be able to access the stories they might contain.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Who owned their predecessors?<\/li>\n<li>Where did they run?<\/li>\n<li>When did they run?<\/li>\n<li>How far did they run?<\/li>\n<li>How fast did they run?<\/li>\n<li>What personal goals did they achieve?<\/li>\n<li>What music did they listen to?<\/li>\n<li>What was the weather like?<\/li>\n<li>What percentage of the shoe is the original?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>It would make recycling a much bigger part of the product as the shoe gathers stories and becomes (potentially) more interesting each time it\u2019s recycled. It would have a birth, death, family tree. History. Legacy. Family. Pedigree even. This could all form part of the back story I suggested when I talked about <a href=\"http:\/\/journal.benbashford.com\/post\/2848763029\">Emoticomp<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The most interesting thing about this line of thought is that it\u2019s not completely unfeasible. Nike already have <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Nike%2BiPod\">a networked service that does some of the things I\u2019m suggesting here<\/a> but before I get <em>too<\/em> carried away\u2026<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/blackbeltjones\/5413911950\/\">One of the photos<\/a> shows the recycling address on a slip in the box. It shows where to send the shoes when they\u2019ve expired. It\u2019s exciting to me because it\u2019s the thing that started me thinking about the things I\u2019m talking about here &#8211; but it\u2019s disappointing because I think it shows a lack of conviction.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>\u201cNike will not accept shoes delivered with postage due\u201d<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>Sad. You\u2019d think that some of the cost of the shoe would include the price of posting them back to be recycled. It suggests that these shoes aren\u2019t really built with that in mind at all. They\u2019re highly tuned, <em>disposable<\/em> shoes and the recycling part is a bit of Nike corporate\u2019n\u2019social responsibility strategy to help mitigate any negative PR that may arise from making a plastic shoe that\u2019ll last a matter of days.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s a real shame, because they could be so much more than they are right now.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>bashford: Matt Jones has written something interesting about \u201cthings with an end\u201d.
