{"id":25307,"date":"2011-04-28T16:00:11","date_gmt":"2011-04-28T16:00:11","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/rafaelfajardo.com\/portfolio\/bookmobility-according-to-inside-higher-ed-the\/"},"modified":"2018-12-05T22:32:16","modified_gmt":"2018-12-06T05:32:16","slug":"bookmobility-according-to-inside-higher-ed-the","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/rafaelfajardo.com\/portfolio\/bookmobility-according-to-inside-higher-ed-the\/","title":{"rendered":""},"content":{"rendered":"<div id='gallery-1' class='gallery galleryid-25307 gallery-columns-3 gallery-size-thumbnail'><figure class='gallery-item'>\n\t\t\t<div class='gallery-icon landscape'>\n\t\t\t\t<a href='https:\/\/rafaelfajardo.com\/portfolio\/bookmobility-according-to-inside-higher-ed-the\/attachment\/25309\/'><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"100\" height=\"100\" src=\"https:\/\/rafaelfajardo.com\/portfolio\/wp-content\/uploads\/tumblr_lkc80sWb141qh13cbo1_500-100x100.jpg\" class=\"attachment-thumbnail size-thumbnail\" alt=\"\" \/><\/a>\n\t\t\t<\/div><\/figure>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/bookmobility.tumblr.com\/post\/4999238311\">bookmobility<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>According to <a href=\"http:\/\/insidehighered.com\">Inside Higher Ed<\/a>, the University of Denver\u2019s Penrose Library (its stacks are pictured above) is poised to make a mistake, much like the one at the Newport Beach Public Library which I <a href=\"http:\/\/bookmobility.tumblr.com\/post\/4194619775\/librarywithoutbooks\">wrote about<\/a> a few weeks ago.<\/p>\n<p>From the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.insidehighered.com\/news\/2011\/04\/27\/university_of_denver_removing_most_books_from_its_library\">story<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>But plans at the University of Denver to permanently move four-fifths of  the Penrose Library\u2019s holdings to an off-campus storage facility and  renovate the building into an \u201cAcademic Commons,\u201d with more seating,  group space, and technological capacity, could make the university a  flashpoint in the <a target=\"_self\" href=\"http:\/\/www.insidehighered.com\/news\/2009\/11\/06\/library\">debate<\/a> about whether the traditional function of storing books needs to happen on campus.<\/p>\n<p>We are not alone in this trend of increasing central campus space for  study, services and student learning and decreasing central campus  space for legacy collections,\u201d said Nancy Allen, dean and director of  Penrose Library, in an e-mail statement.<\/p>\n<p>The proposed change has  raised the ire of some arts, humanities, and social science professors  who say that, while impressive, technology hasn\u2019t yet replaced a good  old-fashioned trip through the stacks. They argue that the  administration dropped the changes in their laps without consulting them  and that it will harm their main mode of research.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou would  never ask a scientist to get rid of his or her laboratory,\u201d said  Annabeth Headrick, an art history professor. \u201cBut that\u2019s exactly what\u2019s  being done to us.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>My university has similarly been moving more and more books to off-site, high-density storage (to make room for more computers, more media, and even space to play video games).<\/p>\n<p>But in addition to the ways that books play a vital role in the <em>kind<\/em> of community center the library can be (as I discussed before), browsing is a key way that the space of academic libraries are and should be used. Much has been <a href=\"http:\/\/www.guild2910.org\/AFSCMEWhatIsGoingOn.pdf\">written<\/a> about what Stephen Chabot <a href=\"http:\/\/subjectobject.net\/2006\/07\/23\/serendipitous-browsing-a-summary-and-commentary-of-thomas-manns-whats-going-on-at-the-library-of-congress\/\">terms<\/a> \u201cserendipitous browsing,\u201d so I won\u2019t belabor the point here.<\/p>\n<p>Suffice it to say, in this short post, that the powerful influences on intellectual work in the humanities\u2014physical proximity, material meandering, and more\u2014are lost without stacks, without a library\u2019s <em>books<\/em>.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>bookmobility: According to Inside Higher Ed, the University of Denver\u2019s Penrose Library (its stacks are pictured above) is poised to make a mistake, much like the one at the Newport Beach Public Library which I wrote about a few weeks ago.
