The life expectancy of men is 47-years\u2013the same as for men in Afghanistan and Somalia. The unemployment levels on the reservation are about 90%. Most people are living on just $3,000 a year.<\/p>\n<p>For the past six years, photographer\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.aaronhuey.com\/\">Aaron Huey<\/a>\u00a0has trained his camera on these problems. But, he says, it took him five years to understand what the real story was. \u201cWhen I first went to Pine Ridge,\u201d says Huey, \u201cthe focus was on getting pictures of gangs, superficial violence, drugs and extreme circumstances.\u201d It wasn\u2019t until he was asked to present a\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ted.com\/talks\/aaron_huey.html\">TED talk<\/a>\u00a0that he pieced together the history\u2013For the first time he saw the reality\u2013how the land was stolen from the Lakota through a series of massacres disguised as battles, and the broken treaties that followed. \u201cIt was,\u201d says Huey, \u201ca calculated and systematic destruction of a people.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Collaborating with two artists,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.whitewallssf.com\/artists\/ernesto-yerena\/\">Ernesto Yerena<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/obeygiant.com\/\">Shepard Fairey<\/a>\u2026\u00a0Huey is creating a nationwide billboard campaign.
