At an early point in his career, probably no later than 1930, Walt Disney lost the ability to draw what he wanted his cartoon characters to look like or his animations to do. So he began to act his cartoons out. In story meetings with his growing staff of animators \u2013 some of whom he had trained in Los Angeles at his studio on Hyperion Avenue, others whom he\u2019d poached from the great New York studios \u2013 Disney would get up, according to Neal Gabler\u2019s new biography,<\/p>\n

enter his trance, and suddenly transform himself uninhibitedly into Mickey or Donald or an owl or an old hunting dog .\u00a0.\u00a0. \u2018He would imitate the expressions of the dog, and look from one side to the other, and raise first one brow and then the other\u2019 .\u00a0.\u00a0. \u2018You\u2019d have the feeling of the whole thing,\u2019 Dick Huemer noted. \u2018You\u2019d know exactly what he wanted.\u2019<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Mickey Mouse\u2019s gestures \u2018were copied from Walt\u2019s when he performed Mickey at story meetings\u2019; until 1946 Disney also voiced him, in falsetto. In another new Life, Michael Barrier\u2019s The Animated Man<\/em>, the studio head is seen by animators acting out \u2018how a Chinese turtle should dance\u2019, or doing \u2018any of the people in the pictures, valets, anything \u2013 he all of a sudden was a valet.\u2019<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
