The <a href=\"http:\/\/harpers.org\/archive\/2007\/02\/0081387\">original 2007 essay<\/a>\u2014a \u201cplagiarism\u201d woven together from passages from other writers\u2014was a huge influence on me and <i><a href=\"http:\/\/austinkleon.com\/steal\/\">Steal<\/a><\/i> and probably a bunch of other people. (Heck, David Shields took the idea and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/0307273539?ie=UTF8&amp;tag=wwwaustinkleo-20&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=390957&amp;creativeASIN=0307273539\">turned it into a whole book<\/a>.)<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2011\/11\/09\/books\/jonathan-lethems-ecstasy-of-influence-review.html\">NYTimes review<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Like almost everything Mr. Lethem has written, \u201cThe Ecstasy of Influence\u201d is a reflection of, and a pixelated homage to, those whose work he fetishizes. If this book has a thesis, it\u2019s this: For an artist, influence is everything. \u201cWasn\u2019t the whole 20th century,\u201d he writes, \u201ca victory lap of collage, quotation, appropriation, from Picasso to Dada to Pop?\u201d My iTunes and bookshelf, c\u2019est moi.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strike>(Kind of a hideous cover, no?)<\/strike> <b>UPDATE from <a href=\"http:\/\/meaghano.tumblr.com\">meaghano<\/a>:<\/b> \u201chaha the cover looks MUCH better IRL.
