It\u2019s also about superheroes, robots, and Norse gods \u2013 so it makes sense that it was inspired in the first place by a 10 year-old.<\/p>\n<p>Last week, I was pointed by\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/#!\/moebio\">Santiago Ortiz<\/a>\u00a0to this excellent chart made by Theo Zaballos, in which\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/patriciazaballos.com\/2012\/03\/15\/connections\/\">he plots the relative interestingness in Avengers characters from the animated series, over time<\/a>. It\u2019s a fantastic example of the power of visualization to help us understand things \u2013 or, put another way, the power of building systems to think about systems. It\u2019s also a reminder that visualization doesn\u2019t always need to be pitted against huge, world-changing tasks \u2013 it can be useful in exploring small, fun, even seemingly frivolous things.<\/p>\n<p>I started reading comics in 1985 (coincidentally, when I was 10). For years, I\u2019d visit the comic shop every Wednesday, and pick up a stack of titles \u2013 and The Avengers was a real mainstay on my list. I was always more of a reader than a collector; my longboxes were full of dog-eared issues from incomplete series, which I revisited over and over again until the stories imprinted themselves in my brain.<\/p>\n<p>There\u2019s a huge storehouse of mythology, cultural touchstones, and real historical events contained in the pages of the 570 issues of the Avengers.<\/p>\n<p>Inspired by Theo, and using\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/api.comicvine.com\/\">comicvine.com\u2019s API<\/a>, I\u2019ve put together a few datasets and some tools that I can use to visually explore some of this leotarded history.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/farm8.staticflickr.com\/7100\/6984526894_e091dea798_b.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>blprnt.blg | Jer Thorp tulpinspiration: This post is about comics.
