That was Deleuze\u2019s first rule. His second rule was that the collaboration would be monogamous: no other parties could be involved, nor would he take part in any of Guattari\u2019s many other militant activities. Anti-Oedipus emerged from their correspondence over the next two years: \u2018long, disorderly letters\u2019 that Deleuze would fashion into Deleuzo-Guattarian prose. In recent years, Dosse notes, there has been a tendency to \u2018de-Guattarise\u2019 the collaboration and to canonise Deleuze at Guattari\u2019s expense, but Deleuze always insisted on the centrality of his friend\u2019s contribution. In his words, \u2018F\u00e9lix was the diamond miner and I was the polisher.\u2019 As they worked on Anti-Oedipus, he recalled, \u2018we no longer knew who had written what \u2026 We were more like two streams coming together to make a third.\u2019 The diamond miner took a less sentimental view of the collaboration. \u2018We\u2019re really not of the same dimension,\u2019 he complained in his diaries. \u2018I\u2019m sort of an inveterate autodidact, a do-it-yourself guy, a sort of Jules Verne.\u2019 Guattari resented \u2018being strapped onto Gilles\u2019, and felt \u2018overcoded\u2019 by the \u2018perfection that he brought to the most unlikely book\u2019. What he really wanted to do was \u2018say stupid shit.
