That kind of thinking, \u201cthis\u201d equals or means \u201cthat,\u201d is <i>identity<\/i> thinking, thinking concerned with meaning as closure. Let\u2019s look at this problem another way: I don\u2019t work in any way that is pure. Either, as a writer, you take a stance that one is going to talk only about oneself, whatever that \u201cself\u201d is \u2013 and if you can find it, you\u2019re doing pretty well \u2013 or you engage in practices that are impure, you make clear, a bit \u00e0 la Sartre, that they <i>are<\/i> impure. What I do is obviously very impure. I don\u2019t re-enact other texts, I directly appropriate: I directly and bluntly use these other experiences which aren\u2019t \u201cmine.\u201d Only they\u2019re mine because I\u2019ve read them.
