He developed a system where students and faculty could send their code to MIT via a teletype machine. To make computer programming even more accessible to students, Kurtz and his colleague John Kemeny created a simple programming language called BASIC (Beginner\u2019s All-purpose Symbolic Instruction Code). It made programming much more intuitive.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>&ldquo;People who absolutely never would have engaged with a computer before were engaging with computers,&rdquo; says Dartmouth professor <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cs.dartmouth.edu\/~rockmore\/\">Dan Rockmore.<\/a> \u201c<strong>It spread so quickly that the telephone company had to put in new trunk lines \u2026 so that everyone who wanted to get on the computer could get on the computer<\/strong>.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.npr.org\/2014\/05\/01\/308569793\/dartmouth-celebrates-50-years-of-basic-computer-language?utm_source=tumblr.com&amp;utm_medium=social&amp;utm_campaign=skunkbear&amp;utm_term=nprnews&amp;utm_content=20140501\">Here more about BASIC from Joe Palca.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Image 3:\u00a0Some of <strong>the first computer nerds<\/strong> look over a program printout in 1969.<\/p>\n<p>Image 4: John Kemeny and his daughter Jennifer look genuinely awed by this revolutionary technology.
