Sherman\u2019s work is, of course, disturbing. It fetishizes and makes perverse sexual vulnerability. It is paradoxical, ambivalent\u2014it unbalances, one of art\u2019s great pleasures (cf. the Stendhal syndrome). This does not take away its instructive or socially useful qualities. On the contrary, it augments them.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<div class='attribution'>\n<p>David Balzar, on Alain de Botton\u2019s truly terrible #artastherapy, winning my heart.\u00a0 (via <a class=\"tumblr_blog\" href=\"http:\/\/emk-irl.tumblr.com\/\">emk-irl<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s a really good piece on what sounds like a really shit show, but David doesn\u2019t just bash Botton (which would be easy), he opens out to a larger discussion of what art is good for and how it works.
