{"id":16039,"date":"2014-07-22T15:19:30","date_gmt":"2014-07-22T15:19:30","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/rafaelfajardo.com\/portfolio\/do-you-think-its-a-question-of-how-much-you\/"},"modified":"2014-07-22T15:19:30","modified_gmt":"2014-07-22T15:19:30","slug":"do-you-think-its-a-question-of-how-much-you","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/rafaelfajardo.com\/portfolio\/do-you-think-its-a-question-of-how-much-you\/","title":{"rendered":""},"content":{"rendered":"<blockquote>\n<p><strong><em>Do you think it\u2019s a question of how much you balance that drive to achieve with being present and enjoying the moment?<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>You know, it\u2019s funny because I frequently get emails from young people starting out and asking, \u201cHow do I make a successful website or start my own thing?\u201d And, very often, it\u2019s tied to some measure of success that\u2019s audience-based or reach-based. \u201cHow do you build up to seven million readers a month or two million Facebook fans?\u201d But the work is not how to get that size of an audience or those numbers. That\u2019s just the byproduct of what Lewis Hyde calls \u201ccreative labor,\u201d which is really our inner drive. The real work is how not to hang your self-worth, your sense of success and merits, the fullness of your heart, and the stability of your soul on those numbers\u2014on that constant positive reinforcement and external validation. That\u2019s the only real work, and the irony is that the more \u201csuccessful\u201d you get, by either by your own standards or external standards, the harder it is to decouple all of those inner values from your work.
