Many of those colleges <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2014\/08\/26\/education\/despite-promises-little-progress-in-drawing-poor-to-elite-colleges.html\">have not<\/a> matched their words with actions. But some have.<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text story-content\"><em>These colleges have changed policies and made compromises elsewhere to recruit the kind of talented poor students who have traditionally <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2013\/03\/17\/education\/scholarly-poor-often-overlook-better-colleges.html?pagewanted=all\">excelled<\/a> in high school but not gone to top colleges. A surprising number of such students <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2009\/09\/09\/business\/economy\/09leonhardt.html\/\">never graduate<\/a> from any college.<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text story-content\"><em>This education gap is a problem not only for the teenagers on the wrong end of it. It\u2019s a problem for the American economy. The economic differences between college graduates and everyone else have reached <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2014\/05\/27\/upshot\/is-college-worth-it-clearly-new-data-say.html\">record levels<\/a>. Yet for many low-income children \u2013 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.brookings.edu\/%7E\/media\/projects\/bpea\/spring%202013\/2013a_hoxby.pdf\">even many<\/a> who get A\u2019s in high school and do well on the SAT \u2013 college remains out of reach.
