But\u00a0how did this historic event actually start?<strong><br \/><\/strong>The original protest was initiated by Kalle Lasn and Micah White, editors of\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/economicsociology.org\/www.adbusters.org\"><em>Adbusters<\/em><\/a>, a Canadian anti-consumerist\u00a0and\u00a0pro-environment magazine.\u00a0The idea was to have a\u00a0peaceful occupation of Wall Street to protest against corporate influence on democracy, a growing disparity in wealth as a result of neoliberalism, and the absence of legal repercussions behind the recent global financial crisis.\u00a0They sought to combine the symbolic location of the 2011 protests in Tahrir Square with the consensus decision-making of the 2011 Spanish protests (<em>Movimiento 15-M)<\/em>.\u00a0\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.vancourier.com\/news\/adbusters-sparks-wall-street-protest-1.374299\"><em>Adbusters<\/em>\u2018 senior editor Micah White said<\/a>\u00a0they floated the idea\u00a0via their email list and it was spontaneously taken up and it quickly spread online with help from the hacker group Anonymous.
