It\u2019s all thanks to a special lab built by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ted.com\/talks\/greg_asner_ecology_from_the_air?language=en\">ecologist Greg Asner<\/a>\u00a0inside a twin-turboprop airplane. From a few thousand feet up, the Carnegie Airborne Observatory uses lasers, spectrometers and other instruments to build a detailed 3-D model of a forest, <strong>identify different species of vegetation<\/strong> and quantify carbon sequestration.
