The goal laid out for it by Wilhelm von Humboldt (based on proposals by Fichte and Schleiermacher) was the \u2018spiritual and moral training of the nation,\u2019 to be achieved by \u2018deriving everything from an original principle\u2019 (truth), by \u2018relating everything to an ideal\u2019 (justice), and by \u2018unifying this principle and this ideal to a single Idea\u2019 (the State). The end product would be \u2018a fully legitimated subject of knowledge and society\u2019 \u2013 each mind an analogously organized mini-State morally unified in the supermind of the State.
