Still, we think, \u201cMaybe taking the backroads would be faster.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s an example of what researchers call \u201calgorithm aversion\u201d: even when an algorithm consistently beats human judgment, <a href=\"https:\/\/hbr.org\/2013\/12\/big-datas-biggest-challenge-convincing-people-not-to-trust-their-judgment\/\">people prefer to go with their gut<\/a>. This can have very real costs, from getting stuck in traffic to missing a sales target to misdiagnosing a patient.<\/p>\n<p>Algorithms make better assessments in a wide range of contexts, and it might seem logical that if people understood that they\u2019d be more trusting.
