Many researchers have suggested that<br \/>\nlaptop note taking is less effective than longhand note taking for<br \/>\nlearning. Prior studies have primarily focused on students\u2019 capacity for<br \/>\n multitasking and distraction when using laptops. The present<br \/>\nresearch suggests that even when laptops are used solely to take notes,<br \/>\nthey may still be impairing learning because their use<br \/>\nresults in shallower processing. In three studies, we found that<br \/>\nstudents who took notes on laptops performed worse on<br \/>\nconceptual questions than students who took notes longhand. We show that<br \/>\n whereas<br \/>\n taking more notes can be beneficial, laptop note<br \/>\ntakers\u2019 tendency to transcribe lectures verbatim rather than processing<br \/>\ninformation and reframing it in their own words is detrimental<br \/>\nto learning. <\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><b>Taking notes with a pen is more effective at learning than using a laptop<\/b>. Also at long hand on paper vs long hand with stylus on electronic tablet.
