are co-hosting\u00a0<i><a href=\"http:\/\/www.cd-cf.org\/symposium\/\">Critical Design\/Critical Futures<\/a><\/i>, a full-day symposium open to everyone with an interest in shaping the future.\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure class=\"tmblr-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/66.media.tumblr.com\/f1335b5aee03db08cb5db33c163352c7\/tumblr_inline_nn66mz5AKT1r4920y_540.jpg\" alt=\"image\" \/><\/figure>\n<p>Conversations will focus on recent advances in speculative design and how designers and social scientists are coming together to rethink the role of design and education in the face of ongoing environmental degradation, growing income inequality and other socio-political factors affecting our collective future.\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure class=\"tmblr-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/66.media.tumblr.com\/b3648703352e3412c12e261c79406685\/tumblr_inline_nn65xiJhMq1r4920y_540.jpg\" alt=\"image\" \/><\/figure>\n<p>Among the goals of the symposium is a desire \u201cto critically interrogate the aesthetics of obfuscation that surrounds mainstream design,\u201d note co-organizers <a href=\"http:\/\/www.risd.edu\/academics\/hpss\/faculty\/Damian-White\/\"><b>Damian White<\/b><\/a>, a sociologist who heads RISD\u2019s HPSS department, and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/gonsherdesign.com\/\"><b>Ian Gonsher MFA 06 FD<\/b><\/a>, an artist, designer and faculty member at\u00a0Brown\u2019s School of Engineering.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The two also worked with RISD\u2019s Media Group to develop a new <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cd-cf.org\/\"><i>Critical Design\/Critical Futures<\/i> website<\/a> that provides an online hub for sharing articles, videos and coursework related to futurism.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"tmblr-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/66.media.tumblr.com\/4176adce08b8dc13acc6353f03858dc1\/tumblr_inline_nn66urYSfV1r4920y_540.jpg\" alt=\"image\" \/><\/figure>\n<p>Free and open to everyone <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eventbrite.com\/e\/critical-designcritical-futures-tickets-16017720433\">with a ticket<\/a>, the symposium runs from 9:30 to 5:15 in the\u00a0Chace Center\u2019s Metcalf Auditorium, with a series of four roundtable discussions involving key thinkers from RISD, Brown, Parsons, Carnegie Mellon and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.freelancersunion.org\/\">Freelancers Union.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>White and Gonsher hope that the event will encourage members of the RISD and Brown communities to continue probing and questioning how critical design and design activism can
