In order to clear this old jazz music, Paley had to<br \/>\ngo through an enormous rigamarole, and this experience has turned her<br \/>\ninto an advocate for a more liberal copyright.\n<\/p>\n<p>\nSo Nina asked if Netflix would stream her movie without DRM. Netflix<br \/>\nrefused. Then Nina asked if she could add some pre-roll to the film<br \/>\nadvising viewers of places they could get it for free and without DRM.\n<\/p>\n<p>\nNetflix refused.\n<\/p>\n<p>\nThis mirrors my experience with Audible and the Kindle, where I, as the<br \/>\ncopyright holder and creator, was not allowed to offer my work without<br \/>\nDRM and\/or a restrictive license-agreement \u2013 I wasn\u2019t even allowed to<br \/>\nadd something to the text or audio saying, \u201cI release you from the<br \/>\nlicense agreement you\u2019ve clicked through.\u201d\n<\/p>\n<p>\nNina\u2019s done what I did. She\u2019s refused to license her works for a<br \/>\nplatform that restricts her audience against her wishes, and she\u2019s told<br \/>\nthe world what she\u2019s done and why. It cost her thousands of dollars, but<br \/>\n she stuck to her principles, and set an example for other creators, as<br \/>\nwell as making sure that her viewers got a fair deal.
