*Epic struggle as Silicon Valley launches a ubiquitous power-grab.<\/p>\n

\u201cBeginning Monday in San Diego, Cisco Live, Cisco\u2019s giant customer conference, was the last time outgoing CEO John Chambers would impart his vision in a keynote speech. \u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd was it ever a speech, filled with fire-and-brimstone predictions.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe upshot: Chambers, Cisco\u2019s CEO of 20 years, says more than one-third of businesses today will not survive the next 10 years. The only ones that will survive will turn their companies into digital, techie versions of themselves, and many of will fail trying.<\/p>\n

\u201c\u00a0\u201cForty percent of businesses in this room, unfortunately, will not exist in a meaningful way in 10 years,\u201d he told the 25,000 attendees, adding that 70% of companies would \u201cattempt\u201d to go digital but only 30% of those would succeed.<\/p>\n

\u201c\u00a0\u201cIf I\u2019m not making you sweat, I should be,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u201c\u00a0\u201cIt will become a digital world that will change our life, our health, our education, our business models at the pace of a technology company change,\u201d Chambers said. He warned companies that they could not \u201cmiss a market transition or a business model\u201d or \u201cunderestimate your competitor of the future -; not your competitor of the past.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201c\u00a0\u201cEither we disrupt or we get disrupted,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cStartups want to upturn every existing business, including taxis (Uber), hotels (Airbnb), and banking, Chambers said.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe quoted JPMorgan Chase CEO Jamie Dimon\u2019s annual letter to shareholders, in which Dimon warned that \u201cSilicon Valley is coming.\u201d Dimon meant that startups were creating new banking apps for everything from loans to payments.<\/p>\n

\u201cCisco\u2019s own painful reorg<\/p>\n

\u201cChambers talked a lot about the painful transition that Cisco underwent over the past three years, which culminated in a massive reorganization of its 25,000-person engineering team in which \u201c24 of 92 leaders\u201d were let go.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe said similar reorgs took place in the sales and administrative ranks.<\/p>\n

\u201cCisco has \u201cchanged 41% of our client-interfacing execs,\u201d he said.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cChambers said the company had cleaned up its 62 business units \u2013 product-oriented fiefdoms and silos that had sprouted up from Cisco\u2019s love of acquisitions. He reorganized them into two huge groups: enterprise and service provider. The divisions now make 18 product \u201cfamilies,\u201d and all of those products must work together.<\/p>\n

\u201c\u00a0\u201cWe had to tie together our silos, we had to change our culture, we had to lead by example,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd we\u2019ll see if Cisco is done. On July 26, Cisco will get a new CEO, Chuck Robbins, who has been hinting that he plans to tighten the belt even further.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
