WAR I<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Modern art, wartime strategy and perceptual psychology converged during World War I, giving rise to dazzle camouflage. Unlike traditional camouflage, which attempted to decrease a ship\u2019s visibility by painting it the same colors as it surroundings, dazzle\u2019s skewed, asymmetric, clashing lines made impossible to determine a ship\u2019s direction of travel, thereby causing submarines to fire their torpedoes in the wrong direction. <\/p>\n<p>The only visual color records of dazzle camouflage from the period are paint-scheme drawings made by the Admiralty and modernist marine paintings. The picture by <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Group_of_Seven_(artists)\" title=\"Group of Seven\">Group of 7<\/a> artist <a href=\"http:\/\/www.gallery.ca\/en\/see\/collections\/artist.php?iartistid=3303\" title=\"Arthur Lismer\">Arthur Lismer<\/a> of <i>HMS Olympic<\/i> in dazzle is not a fauvist hallucination, but a true record of the ship\u2019s appearance just after the Armistice.\u00a0\u00a0The modernist painter\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.tate.org.uk\/art\/artists\/edward-wadsworth-2113\" title=\"Edward Wadsworth\"><b>Edward Wadsworth<\/b><\/a> (British, 1889-1949) supervised the application of dazzle\u00a0camouflage at the Liverpool naval shipbuilding yards during World War I. He painted the image above and others, and also made wood block prints depicting ships in dazzle. After the war, he also painted abstract compositions based on dazzle patterns.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><b>Dazzle camouflage<\/b>, also known as <b>razzle dazzle<\/b> or <b>dazzle painting<\/b>, was a family of ship <b>camouflage<\/b> used extensively in World War I and to a lesser extent in World War II and afterwards. Credited to artist Norman Wilkinson, though with a prior claim by the zoologist John Graham Kerr, it consisted of complex patterns of geometric shapes in contrasting colours, interrupting and intersecting each other.<br \/>Unlike some other forms of camouflage, dazzle works, if at all, not by offering concealment but by making it difficult to estimate a target\u2019s range, speed and heading. Norman Wilkinson explained in 1919 that dazzle was intended more to mislead the enemy as to the correct position to take up than actually to miss his shot when firing.<br \/>Dazzle was adopted by the British Admiralty and the United States Navy with little evaluation. Each ship\u2019s dazzle pattern was unique to avoid making classes of ships instantly recognisable to the enemy. The result was that a profusion of dazzle schemes were tried, and the evidence for their success was at best mixed. So many factors were involved that it was impossible to determine which were important, and whether any of the colour schemes were effective.<br \/>Dazzle attracted the notice of artists such as Picasso, who claimed that cubists had invented it.
