We are Colombians and we live the issue of racism daily,\u201d | Photo: AFP<\/i><\/p>\n<p>In a region where anti-Black racism is either an unspoken or neglected issue, the Afro-Colombian hip-hop group ChocQuibTown is leading the conversation through sharp lyrics of protest and beats that honor and celebrate African-Latino culture.\t<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn Latin America people don\u2019t talk about the issue\u2026 We are talking about a problem that\u2019s alive and real. We are Colombians and we live the issue of racism daily,\u201d said the percussionist and singer of the band Carlos \u201cTostao\u201d Valencia in an interview Tuesday with Agence France Presse.\t<\/p>\n<p>The Colombian group, which gained international fame after winning a Latin Grammy for Best Alternative Song in 2010 and a Grammy nomination for Best Latin Band in 2015, believes it can make \u201ca difference\u201d with its music, which addresses discrimination with lyrics of protest.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cInvisibility, nationally and internationally,\u201d says their critically-acclaimed song \u201cDe Donde Vengo Yo\u201d (Where I Come From), \u201cself-discrimination without reason, imminent racism, a lot of corruption \u2026 war machine, displacements for land interests,\u201d the song continues.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe will always touch upon this thorny issue freely,\u201d Valencia said.<\/p>\n<p>After 15 years of creating music, Valencia said their new and fifth album \u201cBehind the Machine,\u201d is even more defiant than their previous work.\t<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen you recently begin you are not as daring like now.
