As you can imagine, the authorities weren\u2019t too pleased about it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere were arguments in parliament about how this arts fund had been allocated because they were angry that it was embarrassing Australia,\u201d Ellison explains. \u201cNeil did something that was so risky and so rebellious, especially since she was working for Atari at the time. It\u2019s really admirable stuff. Since the arts council did that I don\u2019t think they have awarded money to a video game since.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>You\u2019d think work like Neil\u2019s would bring an end to the tiresome debates about videogames\u2019 cultural validity. But alas, the hand-wringing continues. \u201cGames are actually really contentious, politically speaking,\u201d Ellison points out. \u201cThere are all these misrepresented issues like \u2018what\u2019s the connection between videogames and violence?\u2019 \u2013 that\u2019s never been proved. \u2018What\u2019s the connection between video games and sex?\u2019 \u2013 because there\u2019s an interactive element. It\u2019s still not okay to put sex in a mainstream video game.
