{"id":10597,"date":"2016-04-18T15:00:25","date_gmt":"2016-04-18T15:00:25","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/rafaelfajardo.com\/portfolio\/hewler-erbil-kurdistan-region-iraq-denied\/"},"modified":"2016-04-18T15:00:25","modified_gmt":"2016-04-18T15:00:25","slug":"hewler-erbil-kurdistan-region-iraq-denied","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/rafaelfajardo.com\/portfolio\/hewler-erbil-kurdistan-region-iraq-denied\/","title":{"rendered":""},"content":{"rendered":"<blockquote>\n<p>HEWL\u00caR-Erbil, Kurdistan region \u2018Iraq\u2019,\u2014 Denied their own state in reality, Iraq\u2019s Kurds have declared independence in cyberspace with a new domain name that has provoked the ire of a neighbor hostile to their aspirations.<\/p>\n<p>The new top-level domain \u201c.krd\u201d gives Kurds a separate space in the virtual world at a time when they are gaining legitimacy on the ground through their alliance with the U.S.-led coalition against Islamic State.<\/p>\n<p>Often described as the world\u2019s largest ethnic group without their own state, the Kurds consider themselves victims of a pact that partitioned their homeland between Turkey, Iran, Syria and Iraq after World War One.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThose who imprisoned us within these geographical boundaries do not have the same leverage in cyberspace. In the internet we choose our own borders,\u201d said Hiwa Afandi, who got international recognition for the domain that opened this week for private companies, organizations and individuals to use.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe would rather live in a country called Kurdistan, be it physical or in cyberspace,\u201d said Afandi, head of the department of Information Technology in the Kurdish region of Iraq.<\/p>\n<p>The Kurds were granted the \u201c.krd\u201d domain name in 2013 by the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN), a U.S.-based non-profit organization that manages internet addresses.<\/p>\n<p>It is a \u201cgeneric\u201d name, not a two-letter \u201ccountry code\u201d name reserved for sovereign states.
