How big an issue is the nausea problem for Virtual Reality products? – Quora<\/a><\/p>\n

\u201cI’ve been working with helmet mounted displays in military flight simulation for several decades – I am an expert in the field.IMHO
\n – these devices should be banned – but that may not be necessary
\nbecause after the first wave of early adopters I think it\u2019ll go the way
\nof 3D televisions. But that\u2019s just my opinion. Let me explain why.<\/p>\n

Everyone
\n thinks these things are new and revolutionary…but they really aren’t.
\n All that’s happened is that they dropped in price from $80,000 to
\n$500…and many corners have been cut along the way.<\/p>\n

There
\n are several claims that the nausea problem has either been fixed, or
\nwill soon be fixed, or that application design can be used to
\nwork-around the problem.<\/p>\n

The claims that it\u2019s
\nbeen fixed are based on the theory that the nausea is caused by
\nlatency\/lag in the system, or by low resolution displays or by
\ninaccurate head motion tracking\u2026all of which can (and are) being fixed
\nby obvious improvements to the system. Sadly, the $80,000 googles we
\nmade for the US military had less latency, higher resolution displays,
\nand more accurate head tracking than any of the current round of
\ncivilian VR goggles\u2026and they definitely made people sick – so this seems
\n unlikely.<\/p>\n

The problem is that the people who
\nmake those claims are either ignorant (or are deliberately ignoring) the
\n evidence collected over 20 years of flight simulation experience with
\nVR goggles (only we called them \u201cHelmet Mounted Displays\u201d – HMD\u2019s – and
\nwhat we did was called \u201csimulation\u201d and not \u201cvirtual reality\u201d).\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
