In this blog post John Maeda investigates the dollar cost of ownership of software tools for drawing, prototyping, and presenting design ideas. He focuses on tools for interaction- and communication- design. His is not an exhaustive list and many of the the Free/Libre Open Source (FLOSS) tools are missing. Also missing are the programming environments that allow one to build their own tools. With this caveat in mind his analysis is illuminating. It is a critical looking at the landscape of tools that – should – enable creativity. It asks, “can we afford our tools/instruments?”
