network culture chart | varnelis.net
Kazys Varnelis has been working to craft a chart, a visualization, of the dominant cultural logic of our contemporary period. In this he is following in the steps of (and expanding the work of) Jameson and of Lyotard. The chart is as “handy” as it is important. It helps us to recognize and synthesize our world around us with productive and intelligible metaphors. I recommend you keep a copy in your wallet. This is important for designers because it is necessary to understand the contours of the culture we design within, and for which we design. It is equally important for designers of the network age to understand how systems designed for prior cultural logics might break or fold as they rub against the contemporary logics.
