“Although women now make up the majority of college graduates, the number of female computer science grads has dropped precipitously over the past 25 years—from nearly 40 percent in the mid-1980s to 18 percent in 2009. As a result, only 2 in 10 programmers are women.”

Attracting More Women to Computer Science Requires Shattering the ‘Brogrammer’ Culture – Education – GOOD (via infoneer-pulse)

I’m assuming that a big part of this shift is that the total number of computer science graduates grew explosively, and that the number of female entrants didn’t grow as fast as the overall growth rate of entrants into computer science programs.

Either way, this “brogrammer” bullshit has got to go.

And if you either want to be really depressed (or if for some reason you think sexist attitudes in tech are rare and no big deal, go check out Programmers Being Dicks for the weekly incident report).

Check the Computing Research Association (CRA) to verify your suspicion about the population shift over time. The Taulbee Report tracks overall population in computer science programs as reported by the schools.
