Have scientists found the saddest movie clip ever?

It may be so. In a study that spanned years, researchers pinpointed single scene that elicited more sadness in viewers than any other. It is the closing scene from the 1978 film “The Champ.” In the scene, 9-year-old Ricky Schroder watches his father die of injuries suffered in a boxing match, and the heartbreakingly genuine scene is almost guaranteed to make you cry.

If you don’t believe it, watch it and see. You’ve been warned.

The elicited the most consistent emotions in the study, beating out other scenes, such as one from “Silence of the Lambs” (to elicit fear) and one from “When Harry Met Sally” (to elicit amusement).

Why is it that this sad clip was more consistent in eliciting emotions than others? Is it due to the clips selected? Or does it have broader implications about the artform that is tragedy?
