its cool how all of these relatively niche japanese franchises are enjoying greater success in the west solely because they’re on a machine people own
monster hunter, nier, yakuza, persona, gravity rush, all this stuff you wouldn’t expect to do well is doing well because the PS4 is doing well and the PS4 is a Japanese machine
why
it’s almost as if
the general public likes unique, fun, challenging games and are willing to look past a game’s flaws if the game itself is interesting enough
you know, kinda like how it was when the PS2 was the biggest console ever
and when the PS1 was the biggest console ever
and when the SNES and Genesis were the biggest consoles ever
and when the NES was the biggest console ever
why it’s almost as if the western game industry’s belief that people that play video games only care about homogenized, unchallenging “cinematic experiences” arose due to the success of the Xbox 360
you know, the system that was initially successful solely because it came out earlier and had a significantly lower price tag than the PS3
and even then, the Xbox 360 got majorly outsold by the Wii, which also delivered loads of kinda janky but fun and interesting games
it’s almost as if the western game industry spending millions of dollars making games with zero gameplay but all of the graphics is a complete waste of time, and their decision to do so is based on an isolated fluke
isn’t that interesting that people currently and have always liked to have fun
