ZOMGGUISESOCOOL!  Check out this gender neutral toy store that recently opened in London!

Instead of separating the store into “stuff designed for girls” and “stuff designed for boys”, Harrods Toy Kingdom focuses on “stuff for children”.  Little Riley would be proud.

The term “illegal immigrant” was first used in 1939 as a slur by the British toward Jews who were fleeing the Nazis and entering Palestine without authorization. Holocaust survivor and Nobel Peace Prize winner Elie Wiesel aptly said that “no human being is illegal.”

My older son starts his college career tomorrow in interactive media at the School for Cinematic Arts at USC, also known as game design. I found this as I was cleaning out a drawer. I have no idea how old it is. It fills me with all sorts of complex emotions.

Rules
To participate in Gesamt follow these four simple steps:
1. Check out Lars Six Challenges and be inspired.
2. Film a maximum of five minutes material, in which you make your own reinterpretation of one or more of the six art pieces.
3. Make sure to familiarize yourself with the entry regulations on this page and to read and accept the official rules and terms.
4. Go to Submit Your Film and send your material to Gesamt via Wetransfer or DVD before the 6th of September 2012.

Important dates:
6th of august – 6th of september: Send in your material.
6th of september – 2nd of October: The material will be selected and the film(s) edited.
12th of October: the work will premiere and will stand as an art installation open to the public for at least five weeks. Gesamt will premiere at Kunsthal Charlottenborg in Copenhagen in a dark room with four screens running at the same time – bot not showcasing any material simoultaneously. The installation will run for a time period of 5 weeks.

Do’s
You can base you material on one or as many of the six artworks as you like.
You can send as much material as you wish, but only five minutes of material at a time.
You can submit all types of material, whether it’s fiction, documentary, animation, stop-motion, stills, with or without sound – only your imagination and the six art pieces set the limits.
Your material should be produced in connection to Gesamt and may not have been previously published elsewhere. This means that you can’t publish your materiale anywhere until after the premiere of Gesamt, October 12th.

Don’ts
Do not submit audio, music, pictures or any type of material you do not have rights to. A good starting point is that all the material must be original – created by you.
You need to reinterpret one or more of the six art pieces – but do not directly depict them in your material. For example: do not show Paul Gauguin’s painting or use the audio from Cesar Franck’s Sonata.
Read the official rules and terms for submission of material here.

What is Gesamt looking for in your material?
• Uniqueness and originality
• Creativity
• Compliance with the director’s creative and artistic vision for the film
• How the submitted material complements the rest of the incoming material

The submitted material will be edited and put together with other contributors’ material. It has no influence on the selection of the material for the film, whether it is more or less edited together. The material can be just as rough and fine-cut as you like.

The same applies to the technical quality of the material. Technical quality in itself has nu influence on the selection of the material. However, if your material for example presents an important dialogue, there will be emphasis on the quality of the sound.

The selected material will be part of the final film, which will premiere on the 12th of October 2012.

There have been two great epic-scale adventures of the post War era:  The fall of the Soviet empire and the Apollo program.  Neither of them has gotten a great movie yet.

The Apollo program was the only truly uncharted adventure of our time. Where anything at all could have happened. Since then all we’ve had is manufactured thrills.  And fought each other.

For those of us who weren’t born in 1969, today was the one day in your life that will always be in the history books.  Armstrong was, one must say, the most famous person on the planet.  1000 years from now Barak Obama and Mitt Romney, Brad Pitt, the Kardashians, Breaking Bad and Boardwalk Empire, Beyonce and Britney and every single person with a Twitter account no matter how many followers will have been forgotten, but still every school child will know Neil Armstrong’s name along with Columbus, Galileo and one or two others.

And he maintained it without Tweeting, blogging, podcasting, starting a fragrance line or starring in a reality show.  He did a handful of interviews over the 40 years since Apollo, and that is it.  No building his brand or thinking of other ways he could exploit his accomplishment.  He did something absolutely unimaginable, at total risk before the eyes of the world, broke through our sense of the limitations of mankind, then he went to Ohio and taught math. What he did was left to stand on its own, without layer upon layer of grossness piled on top of it.

Someday, we may see another of his kind.  But we’re not probably not anytime soon.

Pretty much all games are based on black box design, which means player strive to optimize the output of the system. The better the player is at predicting and using the rules that are in the black box, the better they are at the game. This means that most games implicitly task the player to unravel the systems that support them, thus breaking the spell of presence.
(…)
There is a solution to this problem though: keep things simple, let the player fill in the blanks for themselves and make the systems seem more complex then what they really are. Our brains come to the rescue as we are very apt at doing this. The mind constantly needs to take incomplete data and make a big coherent picture of it.

While Drill Instructors inherently and naturally instill fear in recruits, the reliance on yelling and screaming no longer is seen as being an effective means to developing the critical thinking, collaboration and self-confidence the Army seeks to imbue in every single soldier. Dressing down a recruit is seen as the last resort of effective leadership.
